When searching for replacement parts, you may find that you need more than just carbon graphite or PTFE parts.  Many manufacturers also find that they have other consumable parts that need to be replaced that are PEEK.  Knowing what this material is, where to get it, and how to get it quickly can help ensure that your business is impacted by downtime as little as possible.

PEEK

PEEK: What is it?

PEEK, also known as polyether ether ketone, is an organic thermoplastic polymer that is part of the polyaryletherketone family and is most often associated with engineering applications.  This material is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic that boasts excellent mechanical and chemical resistant properties that can withstand high temperatures.  The processing conditions utilized in molding PEEK can impact the crystallinity and therefore the mechanical properties of the material.

This material has many advantages and is a superior product for many applications. It is very resistant to thermal degradation.  It is a unique plastic in that it is compatible with ultra-high vacuum applications.  Its applications are especially useful in the aerospace, automotive, and chemical process industries.

PEEK Characteristics and Applications

PEEK has many unique characteristics that make it ideal for a variety of applications.  The most unique and beneficial properties associated with this material include but are not limited to:

  • Exceptional chemical resistance
  • Superior dimensional stability
  • Excellent wear and friction resistance
  • Good mechanical strength
  • Resistance to gamma and x-rays
  • Excellent in high vacuum applications
  • Contamination resistance
  • Self-lubricating

PEEK is used in a growing number of applications in an ever-broadening range of industries.  These applications include but are not limited to:

  • Oil wells
  • Geothermal well
  • Chemical industries
  • Nuclear environments
  • High-pressure valves

The specific use of PEEK will depend on the application as well as the grade needed.  Below you can see the break down of ROC Carbon PEEK.
